The spread between top and bottom cost performers is a reminder that lender scale only helps when the operating model is built to handle it profitably.
Mortgage per-loan costs showed a $6,350 gap between top and bottom quintiles in Q2 2026, according to a HousingWire article published Sept. 9, 2026, citing Mortgage Bankers Association data. The article, titled “Do you have what it takes to scale profitably for the model you are running?,” frames the issue around whether a mortgage business can grow without letting its cost structure eat the benefit of that growth.
For producing loan officers, branch managers and lender leaders, the number matters because per-loan cost is where strategy gets very real. A company can recruit, market and push for more units, but if the operating model requires too much labor, too many touches or too much overhead per closing, scale can expose the problem instead of solving it.
