The labor-market miss gives mortgage pros another data point for rate conversations, but Realtor.com Research says the Fed’s year-end path is little changed.

The September 2026 jobs report came in well short of expectations, according to an Oct. 2 analysis from Realtor.com Research. Payrolls increased by just 29,000, compared with an 84,000 consensus cited in the report, and July and August job growth was revised down by a combined 60,000 jobs.

For mortgage professionals, the headline miss matters because labor data feeds directly into borrower expectations around the Federal Reserve, mortgage rates, and affordability. Realtor.com Research said the Fed’s path toward a year-end hike was little changed, while the housing market remains squeezed by elevated rates and affordability pressure.
