The VA reminder gives loan officers a simple borrower-education opportunity with Veterans and eligible surviving spouses who assume the benefit is one-and-done.
The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs published a Sept. 15, 2026 reminder that Veterans and eligible surviving spouses can use the VA loan benefit more than once. The agency’s point was direct: many people believe the VA-guaranteed home loan benefit is a one-time benefit, but VA says it is not.
For mortgage professionals, this is less about a new guideline and more about correcting a costly misunderstanding. If a past VA borrower thinks they have already “used up” the benefit, they may never ask about a VA option on the next purchase, move-up, or refinance conversation.
