If confirmed, the move would change a core mortgage credit report workflow for lenders selling loans to Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.
FHFA is reportedly set to order Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to accept two-bureau credit reports, according to an Oct. 1, 2026 HousingWire report that cites Bloomberg. The reported directive would affect mortgage credit reports used in loans delivered to the government-sponsored enterprises and could take effect one to three months after it is announced, per Bloomberg as reported by HousingWire.
For producing loan officers, the practical issue is not just whether two-bureau files become acceptable. It is how quickly lenders, credit vendors, pricing teams, underwriting desks, and loan origination systems can adapt a workflow that has long been built around tri-merge credit data.
